THE SOCRATIC INSTITUTE

We educate adults and motivate them to foster positive changes in Slovakia

WHAT IS OUR AIM?

To find and educate new regional leaders with high moral standards and practical skills to lead positive social changes.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

We run a year-long educational programme consisting of seven workshops that prepare our students to create and lead sustainable community projects across Slovakia.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Every year we select 20 university students and/or recent graduates under 30 years of age with leadership potential. They come from across Slovakia and from various fields of study and work.

THE YEAR-LONG PROGRAMME OF THE SOCRATIC INSTITUTE

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Every student of our year-long programme is required to work on their own community project related to one of these four topics:

  • CLIMATE CHANGE (creating local solutions)
  • DIALOGUE (narrowing the gap between different groups of people)
  • LOCAL DEVELOPMENT (creating a cooperative community that helps with the development of a village, part of a city, etc.)
  • HEALTH (improving physical and mental health and prevention of illness)

In the eleven years of our existence, 157 successful community projects have been created. Of these, 63% were still operating six months after completion of the Socratic Institute programme. These projects have together benefitted more than 12,000 individuals.

WE FOCUS ON PRACTICAL SOFT SKILLS

We organise seven four-day workshops within our year-long programme led by expert lecturers from Slovakia and around the world. They provide our students with practical skills that they can use while leading their community projects, including:

  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT
  • MEDIA RELATIONS
  • FACILITATION AND TEAM LEADERSHIP
  • FAIR USE OF POWER
  • STORYTELLING
  • LOCAL POLITICS

WE TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Our workshops are held in the Education Centre of Zaježová in central Slovakia. It is built on ecological principles, which inspires our students to live sustainably.

The Socratic Institute is part of the Centre for Environmental and Ethical Education Živica, an NGO that has been running environment-focused projects for more than 20 years.

A QUOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SLOVAKIA

Zuzana Čaputová

The Socratic Institute is a unique educational programme for young people, which selects and shapes future leaders of Slovakia. However, it is not merely an education in the sense of information transmission, but it contributes to the formation of values of an entire generation. If I met the age criteria, I would certainly like to go through this programme.
